Who Are You?

Performance. Reflection. Empowerment.

What happens when an accountant and entrepreneur gathers a selection of inspiring leaders, a lord, a couple of professors, and an Olympic athlete to debate apprenticeships and university education?

Simple. The mind starts racing and the ‘inspiration index’ goes through the roof.

Three quotes stuck with me:

When my partner said we can do this, I realised I had something more in the tank that I did not know about.” (Dr Anna Watkins about the final stretch of her race to Olympic gold.)

I’ve seen it in business, sports and elsewhere in life; it is key to believe in yourself. However, it is even more powerful when you can rely on someone else who believes in you – a friend, a partner, a coach, a neighbour, family …

The most important question as a leader is to know who you are”, as Lord Karan Bilimoria, peer and businessman, quoted the Ecuadorian president.

Others have said that only those who grow themselves, can grow their business. And the more you know about yourself and your inner game, the bigger the impact on the world around you (and what matters) will be.

---

I’ve tried it with science and spreadsheets. I’ve tried it with trust and tears. It is beautiful when it comes together as a mixture.” (Dr Anna Watkins)

An excellent reminder that success can be greater than the sum of its parts.

Four questions for the personal reflection:

  • Who believes in you?

  • Who do you believe in?

  • Who are you?

  • Who can you partner with to be greater than the sum of the parts?

Thank you to Gareth John and the team at First Intuition EAST ANGLIA for bringing excellent people (on and off stage) together at the Cambridge Union!
