1046...
... and its relevance for leadership.
4/24/20252 min read
1046 is the average number of days, senior executives hold their job before they change roles again.
How can you ensure to maximise impact during this time?
You could follow the Three Windows (Miller): Effectiveness, Efficiency, and Completion. Others prefer the 1% rule (continuous improvement) or focus on creating a growth-mindset. Again others simply increase speed of action and act surprised when they find themselves burned out and without impact.
Independent of the model, key ingredients to success (not just when time is limited) are Reflection, Clarity, and Priorities (RCP). Rather than rushing into (and through) their 1000 days, the great (healthy and successful) leaders pause and seek the space for ‘RCP’ before speeding up until the next leadership summit – with themselves.
Surely, some leaders are naturals when it comes to ‘RCP’. They wake up and know what to do. Others – and to be honest, most of us – benefit from a safe space, a challenging collaborator, a mental sparring partner - a coach.

What makes a good coach?
A good coach is on your team but has no intention to make it easy for you.
A good coach is 100% convinced that the perfect solutions sit within you, but they won’t let you off the hook until you’ve discovered it.
Or as the boxers would describe the ‘sparring partner’: they hit hard and make you stronger.
Just imagine; a senior exec only reaches 80% of their potential in the first year. That means the organisation only gets value for £80,000 for every £100,000 of the CEO's salary - not taking their impact on team, clients and revenues into consideration.

*Professor Miquel Llado asked 1534 executives over the course of more than 7 years how many days they spent in each position throughout their career. He found the average to be 1046 days. Llado himself was motivated by Professor Paddy Miller and his 1000 days theory.
